Transitions

Posted by bob on January 12, 2025

Sometimes in life, we have to make difficult decisions. For me, the hardest choices are when I have to let go of something in order to take on new challenges. Like many people, I find some comfort in clinging to the past. The future can be frightening. But it also holds great promise and hope.

The publisher of An Engineer’s Guide to Solving Problems will be shutting down at the end of 2024. I am reclaiming the publishing rights and am releasing that text under a Creative Commons License in PDF form.

This means that you will be free to download, read, print, and share this book with your friends and colleagues. Unfortunately, it means that new commercially printed copies will not be available at Amazon or through bookstores supplied by the distributor Ingram.

Best news: those of you wanting a free PDF copy will no longer be forced to deal with scammers or virus-laden fake copies.

Several years back, Lou Frenzel, a columnist at Electronic Design magazine wrote that he wished every engineering student could read An Engineer’s Guide to Solving Problems.1 Now they can, but I don’t know if they will.

Just to be clear, I plan to continue writing these essays and possibly some longer-form work. I hope that you will occasionally check back and join me for some more parables in problem-solving.

Please, get back out there, and go fix something.
